I Have New Found Respect for Single Moms

I always wondered what life is like for single moms. Well, the last couple of days have shown that I had no idea what a strain it is to be the 24/7 full-time Mom/Dad to your children.

My parents offered to take us to the Skyline Drive/Shenandoah National Park, VA. Well, my husband was working so we had to go without him. I cannot pass up a free trip anywhere. My dad was "paying" us back for work that my husband has helped him with.

My son was at his absolute worst in the car. O.K. the Skyline Drive is over 75 miles long. We drove 2 hours to get there and then were in the car a futher 4 hours or so driving different sights and scenic overlooks. Let's just say that by the drive home I had instituted a "no-singing in the car" policy for him. Also, added on a "no saying the same thing over and over again." I was probably more bothered by his loudness as my parents were in the car with us. I did not worry about my mtoher as she wears hearing aids. My dad on the other hand likes to snooze for long stretches and does not like loud noises.

To make matters worse my mother is sensitive to heat, so we had the windows up and the AC on...all.the.time. I insisted on opening the windows so that we could at least hear the rustle of leaves and trees. Because we were on the Skyline Drive...possibly the most picturesque drive in our area. With the AC, the car was icy all the time. The only plus...I did not want to fall asleep at the wheel...it was far too cold in the car.

We Are Not Wilderness People

So, the 5-year-old was given a tent by his grandparents. A 3-person tent. The tent has been in the garage since April. We talked about erecting the tent...never happened. We measured the family room to see if we could put it up indoors...never happened. I started feeling guilty about it. My son never asked about the tent, which made me feel even more guilty.

A bit of background. As a child I slept in a tent once. It rained all night, the tent leaked, and I woke up in a damp sleeping bag. My husband has, to the best of my knowledge, never slept outdoors.

I took each of my daughters to Brownie Girl Scout campouts. We slept in other people's tents overnight. The first time we went was the year of the return of the cicadas...had to move hundreds of cicada carcasses to erect tent...chirping all night long. The second time...torrential rain all night long. The third time...the campsite in Hershey, PA, was next to a freight train line...trains all night long.
So, we are not wilderness people at all. Our idea of roughing it is spending the night at a Holiday Inn Express instead of a Marriott Suites.

Yesterday afternoon I decided that we would spend the night in the tent come what may. My son and I were game. My 9-year-old not so much, in fact she said she would only spend the night in he tenet if nobody stayed inside the house. I got my husband and 12-year-old on board and we were all set.
After much scratching of heads...the tent was erected. The instructions were quite easy to follow and were conveniently sewn to the tent bag. With the wind on our property we need all the help we can get. We tied all the guidelines securely.

After an hour, we had one fully functioning tent:

And one happy boy:

Staycation 2008

We decided several months ago that a huge trip this summer was not a good idea from a financial standpoint. I was highly disappointed, but since I was a part-time graduate student this past school year we were not in a position to fork out huge bucks to fly somewhere. We had planned to take the children to England once my son was 5. Well, he turned 5 in April. I'm more than a little disappointed that we can't make the trek to my former homeland.

You see I have not stepped foot in England since 1993. My husband and I took a two week trip several years in to our marriage and toured the South of England, then headed north to see the Lake District, with a final tour of Scotland...Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, and the chilly battlefields of Culloden. We are both English majors, so the Lake District was a huge hit...Wordsworth cottage as well as Beatrix Potter's house.

I had an extremely nomadic childhood. I was born in Manchester, emigrated with my family to the U.S. at age 4, returned to England at age 7 for a few months, returned to the U.S. at age 8, returned to England at age 9, returned to the U.S. at age 10, with a final return to England at age 11-almost 12. I cannot imagine doing that type of moving around with my own children...too hectic, too chaotic, no time to take up roots before you move to another country, losing touch with friends. Oh, I almost forgot we moved to Italy when I was 15, but I stayed in England with my mother, while my father lived in Italy. Yes, my parents were still married, but lived apart for 4 years...I cannot even imagine.

So, while I have lived in America since I was a freshman in college and am now an American citizen, I still have ties to England. I want my children to see where I grew up. I worry that I will lose the opportunity to travel as the children get older and have more sports and other activities in the summer months. My daughter is only 6 years away from college. We absolutely need to go to the U.K. before she goes to college.

So, here we sit in Maryland on our staycation. We did a five day trip to Ocean City, MD. The kids and husband love the beach...me, not so much. I am glad the children got to go somewhere this summer.

To take our mind of where we could have gone, we have been making memories at home. The wii has been a huge diversion (purchased with vacation-type funds), not for me but the kids. Aside from the screams from the 5-year-old of "It's not fair, that she won," overall it was a good purchase. I have unearthed any number of crafts...we have done play dough, Moon Sand, painted with watercolors, inflated various beach toys from years past, and listened to kids' CDs, and watched movies. Monday we attended a minor league baseball game...kids eat free Mondays!

We have ventured out of the house--my girls could live in their pajamas. Tonight was a good example of memories...a trip to the library to redeem prizes and coupons for reading books, a lengthy game of mini golf--nothing quite as funny as watching a 5-year-old score over 10 on a hole mutiple times, and a trip to Baskin Robbins to have ice cream for dinner. Good food, good family fun, and good memories!

On the itinerary tomorrow more painting (not a craft project, but a new coat of paint for my almost 10-year-old's room, and possibly a trip the county fair...I hear a funnel cake calling my name!

One Down, Four to Go

Boy 5's bedroom is painted and reassembled. All I need is a Fathead on the wall. Debating between Nascar or Redskins. I want to have a wall decoration to grow with him as he is only 5.

Next stop Girl 9 almost 10. Need to use a whole lotta a primer to cover up hot pink walls and Marie the Cat border. Note to self: Beware of decorating a room entirely in Disney characters at age 5 years...by age 7 child will detest said character.

Girl 12 is not due for a bedroom makeover yet. I plan on letting her rearrange her furniture, and remove some items, such as the detested door beads. I can't tell you how many times I have almost snagged a shirt or a sweater, not to mention after I had laser vision correction and I was fearful that I would gouge my corrected eyes on the dreaded door beads.

After that I have two bathrooms to paint. I will wait until childrena re in school to start this project.

This is it for the practical, must-do projects. I can only dream of the new kitchen and the hardwood floors.

On My Own

Today is my first day in a couple of weeks home alone with the three kids. Prior to this Husband was home or we had our regularly scheduled swim practice.

It's 10:13 a.m. Everyone has a had a drink, but no breakfast yet. Boy 5 has watched Handy Manny or Mandy as he puts it. Girls 9 and 12 have watched The Next Food Network Star. Girl 12 wants to make pancakes. I am skeptical re the mess, but she is enthusiastic.

The prospect of staying home all day is appealing to me and Girl 12. I have much decluttering to do. She can occupy herself well. Girl 9 usually follows what her sister does. Here's the eternal problem...Boy 5. He desperately wants to be older and sometimes manages to play on his sister's level. The rest of the time he cries or gets frustrated. The girls play with him at times, but not all the time. He could do with a live-in playmate. No chance of a little brother for me...I am done with babies!

I need to run errands this afternoon, then we have our end-of-year swim party with trophies and dinner prepared by someone other than me! I will need a stiff drink to tackle an errand with the three kids...it is odd I usually don't have all of them with me. Wish me luck!
